Over 2 million blogs post daily, search engine optimization is the key to get your webpage listed on the internet. Without knowing what is SEO basics, your long hours’ effort may be thrown to the trash.

No matter what niche you’re in, SEO basics are inevitable to take your post on the first page of Mighty Google!

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s the practice to boost your site’s appearance when people perform certain search queries.

An optimized site uses a technique that can be both on-page and off-page in order to increase the flow of traffic and to make it search engines friendly.

On-page optimization is the linkage that is tailored within the pages of the site while off-page optimization focuses outside the pages of the site to make it rank prominently in the search engines.

An example of an on-page technique would be adding keywords to your pages from your site itself. Click here for a hands-on experience that leads you to the on-page and off-page infographic.

And, an example of an off-page technique would be exchanging links with another website. We will look into those techniques in more depth later.

It’s very important to note that pleasing your site visitor and providing a good user experience leads to good results with the search engine. It is also the search engine’s goal to provide the best results to internet users.

To make your SEO experience more complete, the basic steps that are required include:

1. Submitting XML Sitemaps

XML sitemaps make it easier for search engine crawlers to analyze your website and keep track of changes, such as new pages being added or deleted.

By publishing your sitemap, it lets the search engines to know which pages have changed, and which of them need to be crawled. Do this for Mighty Google, Bing and Yahoo.

To make things more simple, just do this:

  • Generate an HTML site map to allow website visitors easy navigation of your site.
  • Create a Text sitemap to have a plain list of all your pages.
  • Create an XML sitemap that can be submitted to Google, Bing and other search engines to help them crawl your website.

If you’re just starting, go here for a step by step guide and in-depth information.

2. Page Titles are H1 Tags

Some webmasters are not aware that page titles are already in the H1 tags and repeat them. This creates engine crawlers to see the H1 tags repeated.

Your H1 tag is the most important and works its way down in importance to the h2, h3 and so on.  These tags help support the overall theme and purpose of your page.

While header tags do consist up to h4, h5, and h6, most webmasters focus mainly on the first three since these are the tags that carry the most SEO value.

The h1 tag should contain your targeted keywords(the title of your page). It must closely relate to the page title and should be relevant to your content.

The h2 tag is a subheading and should contain similar keywords to your h1 tag. Your h3 is then a subheading for your h2 and so on.

Search engines crawl websites rating on the importance of site content based on which HTML tags they are under. This is where the header tags come into play as they are the top ranking pieces of your content.

3. Alt Tags For All Images

If an image file cannot be loaded, still the alt text will be displayed so that visually impaired persons can also read what the image represents.

When you use an optimized Alt attribute with a target keyword, it gives your page a boost because alt text is a helpful relevant signal for search engines.

Search engines look at content and index images based on their alt tags. Websites with images that include alt tags appear as being rich in content and therefore rank higher.

Hey wait, never adjust your images directly from your Dashboard. They display unwanted things in Google search. Use Paint or Online Image resizer to compress, edit and crop your images.

Use TinyPNG as your final touch and for lightning fast results.

4. Fast Load Time

Some websites take ages to load and visitors skipped such sites and never return. One of the things that affect SEO is the load time that shouldn’t take more than 3 seconds.

Optimizing it with Page Speed Insights is going to be an awesome leap going forward. If you’re able to spend $9 monthly, you may try site 24/7 to own a fantastic loading speed website.

Remember, a site with faster load times will always rank higher than the one with a slow load.

5. Adding Meta Description to Your Page

Every webpage should include a targeted keyword that the page is intended to rank for. Get some keyword discovery to find the best keyword, and then include that keyword in your Meta Description.

Your meta description is the brief summary of your webpage displayed by the search engines typically up to 160 characters long.

This page is highly influential in the search results to bring users click-through rates. Adding a meta description that matches the content of your website greatly helps your SEO ranking.

6. Naming Pages with the Right Keywords

When search engines recognize your website, they marked the name of your page. Having matching keywords will give you a boost in the rankings.

The domain name purchased should also reflect the niche you wanted to promote, and this is where the question of ‘Relevance in SEO’ comes into play.

A term relevance describes the extent to which the content of a website corresponds to the search term used. It affects how high a website will appear in the search results for a given search term.

The relevance of a website’s content is therefore particularly important for search engines. We will discuss in depth about it later.

Domain Relevance and Niche Relevance are two big building blocks that decide your SEO success online. Spending some amount of time on the two aspects is good practice.

Take control of your SEO by giving the right name of your pages. Get these 5 tips on choosing the right keywords to get started in the right direction.
